Kohl delivers clutch pitching performance in 8-5 win over Northwood

DU remains in the GLIAC Tournament and will face Wayne State tonight at 8:30 PM (7:30 PM CT)

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Panther baseball team got a much-needed pitching performance from junior lefty James Kohl on Saturday afternoon to stave off elimination for the second straight game in the GLIAC Tournament. Davenport beat Northwood 8-5 at Dowling Park and now remains as one of three teams in the tournament. The Panthers will now play Wayne State tonight at 8:30 PM (7:30 PM CT) at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. The Warriors lost earlier today in 12 innings against Purdue Northwest who is 3-0 in the tournament as the sixth seed.

Top-seeded Davenport built an 8-0 lead over the Timberwolves who climbed back into the game with five runs including a two-run home run by Blake Salamon in the seventh inning and a RBI double by Rhett Evans. Kohl buckled down in the eighth inning after a Myles Beale RBI groundout to shortstop made it 8-5. Kohl got a big strikeout of Matt Magno to end the inning.

Kohl handed the ball off to Carson Fischer in the ninth inning and he retired the Timberwolves in order for his second save of the season. Kohl improved to 2-1 this season with both wins coming against Northwood. He went eight innings and allowed six hits and five runs with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Offensively, DU collected 13 hits including two doubles by Noah Marcoux and a triple by Christian Petre. Nolan Anspaugh continued his hot tournament going 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Logan Hylek had a season-high three hits and scored three times with two RBI. Marcoux, Gaetano Vallone, and Tyler Mosher also had one RBI. Davenport improved to 32-21 this season and as the top-ranked team in the Midwest Region this week will face a Wayne State squad ranked second in the Midwest Region. The two teams split four games during the regular season in Caledonia, Mich.
