Panthers wrap up regular season with 5-3 win over Purdue Northwest

Nolan Anspaugh drove in three runs and Caleb Anspaugh drove in another run

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team knew they already had the 2022 GLIAC regular season title wrapped up on Sunday, but they wanted to end the regular season on a high note as they beat Purdue Northwest 5-3 to earn the four-game sweep of the Pride and run their win streak to six. The two teams will meet again on Thursday in the first game of the GLIAC Tournament in Gary, Ind. The U.S. Steel Yard is the site of this year's tournament. DU and PNW are scheduled to start at 4:00 PM (3:00 PM CT).

Much like the previous three games of the series, this one was tightly contested. The Pride had numerous chances to win the game but stranded 17 runners on base. They left the bases loaded in the first, third, and ninth innings. PNW took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Ray Hilbrich had a RBI double into the right field corner. They increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth on three hits including an infield RBI single by Bret Matthys. A second run trying to score from second was gunned out at the plate.

The Panthers tied it up in the bottom of the fifth as Nolan Anspaugh got ahold of one and tripled to center field allowing Caleb Anspaugh and Christian Petre to score with two outs. DU took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh as Nolan Anspaugh again drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center. Carter Troncin scored on the play and reached base after being hit by a pitch.

The Pride tied it up with a run in the top of the eighth as Hayden Matulich had a RBI single up the middle to score Hilbrich. The Panthers took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Noah Marcoux walked on four pitches and Ben Mets walked on five pitches. Carson Eby laid down a gorgeous bunt for a single towards third base to load the bases. Caleb Anspaugh had a sacrifice fly to right center for the first out as Marcoux scored. Mets with two outs then scored on a passed ball.

The Pride got a single and two walks against Alex Lord to load the bases with two outs, but Lord got Tyler Schultz to ground out to shortstop to end the game. Davenport improved to 30-20 overall and 18-6 in the GLIAC. They now are 15-1 all-time against Purdue Northwest including 8-0 at home. Nolan Anspaugh led DU with three RBI and went 2-for-3 with his 12th triple of the season. Caleb Anspaugh went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Eby went 2-for-4 and Petre finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Lord (2-0) got the win in 1.2 relief innings and allowed two hits with two walks and a strikeout. Jack Sielatycki (1-2) took the loss for the Pride going just 0.2 innings but gave up two runs including one earned run with two walks.
