GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Quintan van Wijk of the men's tennis team and
Ayanna Turrubiates of the women's lacrosse team have been named the Davenport University Newcomers of the Year for the 2021-22 season. Multiple nominees were identified for both the men and women before being voted on by the athletic department's coaches.
Starting with van Wijk, the true freshman from Willemstad, Curacao finished with the best single season winning percentage in program history for both singles and doubles play. The rookie recorded a singles mark of 19-4 (.826 winning percentage) and teamed up with
Joel Mast to go 18-5 (.783) on the doubles court. Garnering First Team All-GLIAC honors, van Wijk was the unanimous choice for GLIAC Freshman of the Year.
As for Turrubiates, the first-year transfer from Indianapolis led all of Division II in goals per game with 4.94. The First Team All-GLIAC recipient racked up 89 goals, more than any other player in the GLIAC and the second most by a DU player in program history (Brooke Knoll, 93 in 2017). The Lansing native also set school records for total shots (175), total shots per game (9.72), shots on goal (139), and shots on goal per game (7.72). Her 10 scores in her second game as a Panther against McKendree On Feb. 20 are tied for first in program history (Jessica Lemcke, 2017).
