CALEDONIA, Mich. - The men's soccer team was trying to make it back-to-back wins against nationally-ranked teams to open the 2022 season on Saturday. No. 25 Maryville would not let that happen with a 1-0 win over the Panthers in a match where the Saints controlled the flow and finished with 22 shots compared to just six for Davenport.
The game's only goal was scored in the 51st minute. Sebastian Weitlaner scored with his left foot from around 17 yards out to the lower right corner. Cedric Sengl had a nice feed from the middle to the left wing for the assist on Weitlaner's first goal of the season. Maryville had 11 shots total in each half. Four of their shots were on goal. Davenport had just two total shots after halftime, but out of six total shots there were three on frame.
Nick Hemann got the shutout in net for the Saints (1-1).
Shane Marinkovich also made three saves on the day.
