Panthers drop GLIAC opener at #13 Saginaw Valley State

DU trailed 4-0 but fought back with two second-half goals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The men's soccer program has been sitting on 199 wins all-time after a season-opening win over then No. 16 Illinois-Springfield. The Panthers couldn't get back in the winner's column on Sunday afternoon at No. 13 Saginaw Valley State in a 4-2 defeat. The GLIAC opener for the Panthers saw the host Cardinals bombard them with four goals in a span of just over 11 minutes in the latter stages of the first half. DU currently sits at 1-4 overall and have dropped four straight matches for the first time since October 2018.

The Cardinals recorded half as many total shots but converted in the right moments. Davenport had 20 total shots compared to 10 for SVSU and also led 12-7 in shots on goal. The scoring started in the 31st minute as Robbie Baker scored his first of the season from Brady Walker. Jonathan Monney continued a blistering start of the season for the Cardinals in the 34th minute with his seventh goal of the season from Baker. Monney was at it again in the 38th minute for his eighth goal of the season from Anthony Waller. Mooney leads the GLIAC in goals and was seventh nationally heading into the contest. Waller's first of the season in the 42nd minute from Joshua Rubin gave the undefeated Cardinals (5-0-1) all the cushion they needed.

Davenport did not roll over though as they scored twice in the second half to at least get the attention of SVSU. Eoin Broughan scored on a penalty kick right at 51:00 for his second goal of the season. Matt Whelan then scored his third goal of the season with an assist from Faheem Patel in the 71st minute. There were four yellow cards served to the Cardinals and three issued to the Panthers. The teams combined for 33 fouls in the match.

Next up is a date with GLIAC preseason favorite Parkside (5-1, 2-0 GLIAC) on Friday, Sept. 16 at 1:30 PM from the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Mich.
