CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team showed a lot of heart and played to their first tie of the season (1-1) against visiting Northern Michigan on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
The stat sheet doesn't really tell the true story of a Panther team that was thirsty to end a tough stretch without a win or tie. Northern Michigan totaled 15 shots including 10 on frame.
Shane Marinkovich made a season-high nine saves for the Panthers. Davenport had eight total shots including seven in the second half. The shots just missed the frame but they were very close to breaking the tie on a couple of occasions.
The Wildcats scored first in the 23rd minute on a great individual effort by Philipp Rimmler. He dribbled for a while and got enough space to rocket the ball middle off the bottom of the crossbar and it grazed down and over the goal line for his first tally of the season.
The Panthers answered in the 30th minute with a defensive turnover by the Wildcats. NMU passed back and from a distance but
Eoin Broughan read the pass and stepped in front of it. He dribbled a few yards on the left wing and fired with his dominant left foot from 10 yards into the lower left corner of the net for his third goal of the season.
Davenport finished with nine corner kicks and saw five players log all 90 minutes including
Joseph Renner,
Micaiah Papa, Broughan,
Matt Whelan, and
George Deveau.
