Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Panthers pull out 3-2 victory at Upper Iowa in wild finish

Justice Sikkema, Andrew Dykstra, and Tyler Welch all scored for the Panthers

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Davenport men's soccer team had nothing close to a relaxing Sunday afternoon as they traveled to Upper Iowa. The Panthers built a 2-0 lead through the first half only to see the Peacocks tie it up with goals nearly six minutes apart. The final few minutes were chaotic and featured two red cards and three yellow cards.

The madness began with just over two minutes remaining when Upper Iowa's Edward Stephens-Truman had a hard slide tackle from behind just past midfield and was shown a red card. As the play concluded, down the field a yellow card was issued to Justice Sikkema for a push against a Peacock defender. Davenport's free kick was in the box and Joseph Renner collided with Peacock goalkeeper Archie Watts and was given a yellow card. The ball was pushed upfield by Upper Iowa and they were awarded a free kick on a foul in Davenport territory. The free kick was off target to the right and DU goalkeeper Shane Marinkovich quickly tossed the ball in the other direction on a quick attack. Eoin Broughan blasted a ball about 40 yards downfield and Matt Whelan raced alongside a Peacock defender to get to it. Inside the box, the ball was kicked off a sliding attempt to clear by Upper Iowa and Sikkema caught the deflection right off his shin and had enough power to just get the ball over the goal line. A Peacock player slid to prevent the goal but kicked the ball straight up into the top of the net with 46 seconds to play. Sikkema was given another yellow card for excessive celebration which meant he now had to leave the match and both teams played 10-on-10 for the remainder of the match.

Tyler Welch scored in the second minute from the right wing as Sikkema had a great throw-in followed by a nice one-touch pass by Whelan to a cutting Welch who scored his third of the season from about eight yards into the top left corner. Andrew Dykstra made it 2-0 in the 37th minute with his first collegiate goal. Whelan played a long through-ball on the ground and Dykstra caught up to it in stride and carried to about 11 yards on the right wing before shooting off the inside of the far left post and into the back of the net.

Carson Cajuste carried Upper Iowa on his back scoring in the 62nd minute and again in the 68th minute to tie the match. Davenport with the win improves to 3-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the GLIAC. Upper Iowa falls to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference. The first half was all DU with a 9-1 edge in total shots. In the second half, Upper Iowa closed the gap and actually took 11 shots compared to nine for the Panthers. Marinkovich made three saves for Davenport and Watts had seven saves for the Peacocks.
