Panthers down Rangers in strong team performance

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Davenport University men's soccer team defeated Wisconsin-Parkside in a 3-2 result for a pivotal win on the road.

The Rangers seemingly controlled the pace of the match within the opening minutes, taking a 1-0 lead just under two minutes into the action. Three shot attempts later, Parkside once again scored (2-0) seconds past the 10-minute mark to take full control of the momentum. Over 20 minutes passed, and a costly foul by Parkside set up the Panthers for a free kick attempt outside of the box taken by Vitalis Takawira Jr. who sent the ball into the bottom right corner to cut the deficit to one goal, 2-1, before the end of the half (37').

DU put forth a concerted effort in the latter 45 minutes of the match, as a scoring opportunity set up by Ben Godden found the foot of Drew Matyunas who marked his first career goal (51') and first of the season to level the match. Three minutes later, the Panthers were back in the attacking third as a cross attempt from Josh Cook intended for Takawira Jr. was ineffectively diverted by the Rangers and sent the ball into their own goal, putting DU up 3-2 (goal awarded to team).

The goal would ultimately be the final score of the match as DU put together a strong defensive performance to upset the No. 1 GLIAC opponent and level the season series at 1-1.

With their highest amount of goals scored in a match this year, DU moves up to 4-4-5 overall, 3-3-3 GLIAC ahead of their final regular season match of the season.
