Panthers clinch home field advantage in GLIAC Tournament following victory against PNW

HAMMOND, Ind. - Davenport University men's soccer defeated Purdue University Northwest 2-1 in a strong match that clinched home pitch advantage for the 2023 GLIAC Tournament.

"I'm very proud of the boys over the weekend. So many different players stepped up to the level that we needed in order to get the results we did," said head coach Chris Hughes. "We faced two good teams, on the road, and found results. Not an easy feat in this league."

The victory against the Pride comes just two days after the Panthers also defeated Wisconsin-Parkisde 3-2, both matches played on the road for DU and showcasing their resilience.

A scoreless first half was followed by a stronger second half overall. Andrew Dykstra has been an offensive leader for DU this season, and would open the scoring for DU inside of the 62nd minute off an assist from Vitalis Takawira Jr to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage - marking Dykstra's fifth goal this season for a team high. Just minutes later, and Kirby Eggers tallied his second career goal (67') off an another assist from Takawira Jr. (team-high three assists this year) and putting DU in full control of the match.

The Panther defense for the next 15 minutes was solid throughout, until a costly penalty kick call against DU allowed for the Pride to add their only goal of the match seconds before the 82nd minute and the final score of the match. Bobby Curran recorded three saves in the Panther victory, allowing for the team to level the season series at 1-1.

DU will now face off against Northern Michigan University in the 2023 GLIAC Tournamnet Quarterfinals next weekend with a pending date and time.

"We know what's at stake as we move forward and the boys made a statement," Hughes said."Now we look forward to the GLIAC Tournament this coming weekend."
