Panthers finish in top 3 at Don Kimble Invitational

KENTWOOD, Mich. - The Davenport swimming and diving teams hosted the Don Kimble Invitational on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Kentwood Aquatic Center. The women's team placed second out of eight schools that scored points with 695 and had six first-place, four second-place, and three third-place finishes. The men's team placed third out of seven schools with a total of 750. They had five first-place, four second-place, and seven third-place finishes.

All of the Davenport divers came away from this weekend with at least one lifetime personal best. In the three-meter, Grace Overbeek scored 313.8 in her 11 dives and Dylan Theisen scored 375.2 on his 11 dives. In the one-meter, Overbeek scored 342 points on 11 dives and Theisen was third in the competition with a score of 414.35 in 11 dives.

In the pool, there were several great performances by the Panthers. They set a team relay record on the women's side in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.66 (Julia Mizik, Ella Wagner, Rebecca Wallis, Emelie Hellgren) and took first place. The 400 medley relay also set a record in a time of 3:48 (Alicja Pinkowicz, Wagner, Chelsea Engelsman, Wallis) and won the event. The men's 400 medley relay also earned the school's top mark in a time of 3:18.30 (Marcel Setlak, Owen Stender, David Szczygiel, Kevin Mills) and took first place.

Other notable performances included Wagner on the women's side hitting a NCAA "B" Cut in the 200 (2:05.11) and 400 (4:27.24) IM events to win both events. Wallis swam her way to two "B" Cuts as well in the 200 (1:52.04) and 500 (5:02.21) freestyle events. Pinkowicz established three new team records including the 100 fly (56.30), 100 back (56.41 - first place)), and the 200 back (2:01.01) in which she also hit the "B" Cut standard and placed first. Hellgren also set the team record in the 50 free with a time of 23.96.

On the men's side, Gerard Labernia Oms had a fantastic meet with three team records. He swam in the 500 free (4:35.30), 1,000 free (9:37.72) and the 1,650 free (16:02.91) showing his excellent endurance. Stender in the 100 (first place) and 200 breast (first place) hit the "B" Cut with times of 54.20 and 2:00.21 respectively. Setlak set a new program record in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.31. Mills showed his sprint swim ability in the 50 free to hit the "B" Cut with a time of 20.41 and won the event. Eric Perczak hit a "B" Cut in the 200 fly (1:49.79) and won the event with a season best.
