Preview: Panthers Prep for Gary Miller Classic

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  Coming off its home opening victory of Great Lakes Christian, the Davenport University men's basketball team heads to Erie, Pa over Thanksgiving weekend for the Gary Miller Classic. The Panthers (2-3, 0-0 GLIAC) will open the tournament against Lincoln on Friday (Nov. 24) at 7:30 p.m.

In the victory over GLCC, DU knocked down a school record 20 three-pointers, shooting nearly 50 percent from deep. Marcedus Leech Jr. led the way in the win, draining a career-high seven threes and a season-high 25 points. Jeff Carrier recorded his first career double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

About the Lions
  • Finished their 2022-23 campaign 17-15 while posting an 8-8 record in conference play. The Lions had a strong finish to the year, advancing to the CIAA conference championship game, where they lost to fifth-seeded Winston-Salem State, 62-57. As the No. 6 seed in the tournament, Lincoln defeated No. 2-seeded Fayetteville (53-49) and No. 3-seeded Virginia State (76-67) to advance to the championship game. 
  • Peter Sober earned CIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors to start the 2023- 24 season (Nov. 14). The 6-9 forward averages 16 points, 7.8 rebounds and two blocks per game. Sober also shoots a staggering 71 percent from the field. 
  • Bakir Cleveland leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per contest. Reggie Hudson was named to the All-CIAA Preseason Team.
  • Picked No. 7 in the CIAA preseason poll.

Up Next
The Panthers will conclude their time at the Gary Miller Classic on Saturday (Nov. 25), taking on either Gannon or Georgian Court, depending on Friday's results.
