Preview: Panthers Resume Action Against Northwood and GVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After a week off, the Davenport University men's basketball team returns to action with a pair of road games. The Panthers (3-4, 0-0 GLIAC) will head to Midland, Mich. to face Northwood on Wednesday (Dec. 6) and then go across town on Friday (Dec. 8) for their GLIAC opener against Grand Valley State. Both games are slated for an 8 p.m. tip off. 

DU has won two of its last three games, defeating Great Lakes Christian (106-62) and Georgian Court (97-72). In the win over the Crusaders, the Panthers drained 20 three-pointers, the most in school history. 

Marcedus Leech Jr. was named week 3 GLIAC Player of the Week (Nov. 27) after averaging 23 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists through three games. He also shot 59 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from deep. Leech Jr. eclipsed 1,000 career points in the victory over Lincoln, scoring a season-high 29 points. He drained a career-high seven three-pointers in the team's 106-62 win over Great Lakes Christian. 

Off the bench, Jeff Carrier has stepped up as of late for Davenport, scoring in double-figures in three straight games. The junior also notched the first double-double of his career, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards against Great Lakes Christian.

About the Timberwolves
  • Finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 2-26 overall record, finishing No. 11 in the G-MAC standings. The Timberwolves ended the year with 10 straight losses.
  • A pair of transfers lead the way for NU, Collin Albert (St. Clair County CC) and Jaylen Hodges (Davenport). Albert averages a team-high 16.3 points per game, shooting 42.3 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from deep. Hodges, a former Panther, is averaging 11.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
  • The Timberwolves have faced four other GLIAC opponents this season, falling in all four games (Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Saginaw Valley State and Purdue Northwest).

About the Lakers
  • Ended their 2022-23 campaign 18-12, going 11-7 in GLIAC play, finishing fifth in the conference. The Lakers advanced to the GLIAC Tournament semifinals after defeating Lake Superior State 68-64 in the opening round.
  • Marius Grazulis, a First Team All-GLIAC selection a season ago, is the top returner for GVSU. The 6-11 forward leads the team in scoring (16 PPG) and rebounding (9.5 RPG), both rank top-five in the GLIAC. 
  • Along with Grazulis, three other Lakers double figures so far this season; Britain Harris (12.3), Mason Docks (11.7) and William Dunn (10.8).
  • As a team the Lakers rank second in the conference in three-point percentage (37.4) and third in rebounds per game (42). Grand Valley State is also second in the nation in rebound margin (13.5).
  • Picked to finish No. 3 in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
