Panthers Comeback Effort Not Enough Against GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team fell 75-65 to Grand Valley State on Friday evening at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

Trailing by as many as 22 in the second half, the Panthers put together a massive 20-4 run to trim the deficit to six (68-62) with 1:31 remaining. During that stretch, Marcedus Leech Jr. scored 10 of Davenport's 20 points. However, the comeback effort would not be enough, as GVSU responded with a 6-0 run to seal the contest.

After falling behind by double-digits (16-6) early in the first half, the Panthers slowly chipped away at the Lakers lead. Jovan Tucker stole a pass from GVSU, went coast-to-coast and dumped the ball off to Aidan Moon in the post for a layup to trim the Panther deficit to five (19-14).

Moon struck again a minute later with a steal and dunk in transition, setting the score at 21-16 in favor of Grand Valley. With 2:15 remaining in the first half of action, Raishaun Brown found Leech Jr., who hit a mid range jumper to bring the Panthers within four (32-28).

Davenport shot 46.2 percent from the field in the first half compared to 41.2 percent for Grand Valley State.

Leech Jr. finished with a team-high 19 points, making a season-high seven free throws for the Panthers. James Felton finished in double figures for the third consecutive game, tallying 10 points, four rebounds, a steal and two blocks. Myles Belyeu added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Matas Deksnys chipped in with eight points and four boards.
