QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 24-ranked Davenport University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener 9-7 against Quincy Friday afternoon at QU Stadium in Quincy, Ill.

Ayanna Turrubiates, the Panthers (0-1) leading scorer a season ago, got things started as she found the back of the net 1:39 into the contest. The Hawks (1-0) answered 54 seconds later with a goal of their own to tie the game at one apiece.

Jenna Gillis found Kylie Pettus to cap off a back-and-forth first half of action, giving Davenport a narrow 4-3 advantage heading into the half. The goal marked the first of the freshman's collegiate career. 

With the score tied 5-5 after being outscored 2-1 in the third period, Turrubiates scored her third goal of the contest with 12:49 remaining in the fourth period to give the Panthers a one-point lead. One minute later, Blakely Malpass snuck one past the goalie to grow the DU lead to 7-5 with 11:49 to go in regulation. 

The Hawks scored four unanswered over the final 5:17 of play to secure the victory over the Panthers. 

Looking ahead, Davenport will return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. EST against McKendree in Lebanon, Ill.
