LEBANON, Ill. - Ayanna Turrubiates scored three goals for the second consecutive game as the No. 24 Davenport University women's lacrosse team fell to McKendree 12-9 Sunday afternoon at Leemon Field.
After allowing three goals to The Bearcats (1-0) over the first 7:32 of the second half and falling behind 10-3, the Panthers (2-0) scored six of the final eight goals of the contest. The Panthers shut the Bearcats out in the final period, outscoring them 3-0.
Davenport grabbed the first lead as Kylie Pettus found the back of the net 47 seconds into the contest. However, McKendree scored four consecutive goals and held the DU scoreless for the remainder of the first period.
Turrubiates tallied her first goal of the game with 7:30 remaining in the first half of action to trim the McKendree lead to 4-2. The Bearcats scored three more goals over a 2:04 span, before
Blakely Malpass scored the final goal of the half to cut the DU deficit to 7-3 heading into the break.
As a team, Davenport registered more shots on goal (31-30) and shots on goal (27-23) than McKendree. Malpass scored two goals on four shots for DU in the loss. Pettus finished with a perfect two goals on two shots for the Panthers, while goalkeeper Maisy Latus finished the contest with 11 saves.
Davenport will continue its six-game road trip to start the season as they are set to battle No. 15 Lynn University on Feb. 28 in Boca Raton, Fla. at Bobby Campbell Stadium at 4 p.m.
