Leech Jr. First Half Explosion Leads Panthers Past Huskies

Marcedus Leech Jr. scored 23 points in the first half for DU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Marcedus Leech Jr. finished with 30 points, four rebounds, and a steal to lead the Davenport men's basketball team to a 77-71 victory over Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon at the DU Student Center.

The Panthers (7-17, 3-11 GLIAC) shot a blistering 58.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range while never allowing the Huskies (7-17, 4-11 GLIAC) to lead in the contest.

James Felton set a career-high 21 points for DU in the win, while adding six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Jordan Sterling finished with a well-rounded nine-point, six rebound, and seven assist performance. Jeff Carrier knocked down three shots from behind the arc to finish with nine points.

Holding a 23-20 lead with 6:27 remaining in the first half, Leech Jr. drained a triple to push the Davenport lead to six. MTU responded with a three-point shot of its own before Leech Jr. hit another shot from beyond the arc on the ensuing possession. 

Leech Jr. exploded for 23 points in the first half, hitting 5-of-6 shots from three-point range.

The Huskies were able to tie the game 51-51 with 13:20 remaining. DU began to create separation with 7:14 to go in the contest, as they were able to go on a quick 5-0 run to take a 66-58 advantage.

Sterling helped seal the game for the Panthers, burying a midrange jumper with just over three minutes remaining to propel the lead to eight.

Davenport will now head on its final road trip of the season, matching up with Wayne State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Detroit, Mich. Followed by Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Mich. on Saturday at 3 p.m.
