Strong First Half Not Enough in Loss to Bulldogs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Lillee Gustafson scored in double figures for the eighth time in her last nine games as the Davenport University women's basketball team fell 72-54 to Ferris State Thursday evening at the DU Student Center.

Gustafson scored a team high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Panthers (7-20, 1-16 GLIAC). Mary Liedel recorded the second double-double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds while adding four assists. Jaci Walker chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds for DU.

As a team, Davenport shot 42.1 percent from the floor, 75 percent from the free throw line, and out-rebounded the Bulldogs  (16-10, 9-8 GLIAC) 35-34 in the contest.

After trailing 5-2 in the opening minutes, Gustafson scored six straight points for the Panthers to gain an 8-7 advantage with 2:48 remaining in the first quarter. Makenna Bryant found Liedel in the paint as she put in a layup in the closing seconds to lead 10-9 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was a high-scoring affair, as the Bulldogs edged the Panthers 20-19 to tie the game at 29 apiece heading into the break.

Walker hit a turnaround jumper from the free throw line 5:58 seconds into the second quarter to grow the DU lead to 24-19. Walker then hit the final shot of the half for the Panthers, a triple from the top of the key, scoring nine points in the quarter and gaining a three-point lead.

Ferris State took control in the third quarter, outscoring Davenport 24-13 behind hot shooting from deep, hitting 4-of-8 shots from three-point range. The Panthers could not recover in the final quarter as the Bulldogs once again shot 4-of-8 from deep to secure the victory.

Chloe Idoni led the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points, adding eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Ellie Irwin finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists, blocks, and steals. Kenzie Bowers chipped in with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals.
