ORLANDO, Fla. - The Davenport women's tennis squad continued their spring break trip at the USTA National Campus on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Panthers competed in a doubleheader, first earning a stunning win over Adrian 9-0. The Panthers went on to play 24th-ranked Florida Southern College, falling 6-1 underneath the sunset.
The Panthers swept for the doubles point against the Bulldogs. For one doubles, it was
Skye Vandeleur and
Hermon Mikael who played and leaped to an 8-1 victory over Elizabeth Himebauch and Claire Earley. At two doubles,
Charlotte Zhuwakini and
Valentina Moreno earned the doubles win for the 8-1 triumph over Bethany Posey and Vasiliki Gargasoulas. For the three-doubles position,
Sophie Jackson and
Kumiko Yamaguchi worked for an 8-5 win over Hope Busscher and Ava Hovey.
Davenport began singles up 3-0 to clinch the team win.
Isabella Carofano at one singles earned a comfortable 6-4. 6-2 victory. At the two-singles spot,
Louise Hosking had a fabulous finish achieving the 6-0, 6-1 win over Posey. Yamaguchi in at three singles showed signs of stardom as the match was won without losing a game 6-0, 6-0 over Busscher. The Davenport magic must have spread to Moreno as the match was won with 12 straight games as well 6-0, 6-0 over Brooke Posey.
The Panthers were swept for the doubles point, but not without throwing the claws out first against the Mocs. At one doubles,
Amy Bloch and
Willemien Coetzee did not go down easy 7-6 (9-7) to Maxima Ellenberg and Laura Vetter. Two doubles featured
Vandeleur and
Mikael competed as they lost their match 6-2 to Neli Sunjic and Vivien Charvatova. At three doubles,
Hosking and
Carofano fought in a war as they were dismissed 7-6 (7-3) to Kennedi Brown and Kelly Klaren.
Bloch at one singles fell to Laia Pasini (6-1, 6-1). For two-singles spot, Coetzee earned a physical victory over Ellenberg (6-0, 7-5). Vandeleur in at three singles was defeated by Olivia Bryant (6-1, 6-2). Four singles saw Mikael hustling for six games as the match was lost (6-4, 6-2). Carofano at five put up a great effort in the first set before falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to Vivien Charvatova. Lastly, Hosking played six singles and was ousted by Jolie Miller (6-2, 6-0).
