Early walks lead to 11-3 loss at Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team was looking for their first winning streak of the season after a 2-1 win yesterday against Gannon. After two great days of pitching for DU, today's contest at Embry-Riddle did not go so well in a 11-3 loss to the Eagles.

Aaron Ball got his first start for the Panthers but struggled mightily with his control. After a one-out double and ground out for the second out of the first inning, Ball threw plenty of them walking four straight batters including three with the bases loaded to make it 3-0. The coaching staff had no choice but take Ball out of the game and replace him with Alex Lord. Lord surrendered a two-RBI single to the first batter he faced and Embry-Riddle had a 5-0 lead in the blink of an eye.

Davenport got one run back in the second as Coltrane Rubner singled with one out and scored with two outs on Logan Hylek's RBI double to the gap in right center. The Eagles got that run back in the second as Alex Britton had a two-out RBI double. Britton would finish 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Michael Tchavdarov launched his first home run at DU with one out in the fourth inning to make it 6-2. The Eagles got yet another two-out scoring play as Josh Reynolds hit a two-run single to right field for a 8-2 lead.

The Eagles put it away with three runs in the sixth inning. Britton had a RBI single and AJ Marinello later had a two-run single off reliever Jack Snow. Gaetano Vallone had a RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning for the final scoring play in the game. Cade Kontny and Jack Dungan it should be noted had scoreless relief appearances. Kontny went 1.1 innings and retired all four batters he faced. Dungan made his first career appearance and struck out the side with a walk in the eighth inning. Ben Mets, Tchavdarov, and Hylek all had multiple hits with Hylek going 3-for-4.

The team will have a day off before returning on Friday with a game against former GLIAC member Ashland. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:45 PM in Davenport, Fla. at Northeast Regional Park. It should be a good one as the teams have each won eight games against each other in the all-time series. The Eagles are 3-0 this season as they swept Concord Feb. 24-26.
