GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's tennis team was challenged at home at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Club on Friday afternoon and were taken out by No. 24 Grand Valley State 5-2. The Panthers claimed the doubles point to build some early momentum. They displayed their dominance in doubles yet again, as it marks the fifth straight match where the doubles point was awarded to the Panthers. For one doubles,
Amy Bloch and
Willemien Coetzee captured a difficult 6-4 win over the seventh-ranked doubles tandem in DII featuring Vasileia Griva and Taylor Barrett.
Louise Hosking and
Isabella Carofano competed at three doubles and they were defeated by Ana Romero Gonzalez and Amanda Diaz 7-6(7-3). In the two doubles position,
Skye Vandeleur and
Hermon Mikael acquired the doubles point for the Panthers with their 7-6(8-6) victory over Rachel Sam and Estefania Hernadez.
The Panthers got off to a slow start in singles after grabbing the doubles point. Starting at one singles, Bloch was ousted by Griva (6-3, 6-2). Coetzee at two singles went the distance, falling 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to Barrett. Vandeleur played three singles as Rachel Sam was too strong for the Australian native, (6-0, 7-6 (7-3)). Mikael battled at four singles, after only earning one game in the first set, the Swede obtained the second set 6-3, but the momentum did not last long as the final set was dropped 7-5 to Anna Soteras.
