CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team saw their six-game win streak come to a halt on Friday as Saginaw Valley State took both games of a doubleheader by scores of 5-1 and 14-4. The team ran into a dominant pitcher in Tyler McLaren in game one and saw game two get away from them in the final two innings.
GAME ONE
The Panthers could only scratch across one run on seven hits against McLaren who improved to 6-0 this season. The right-hander went seven innings and allowed three walks with three strikeouts. He only gave up one extra-base hit to
Khale Showers which was a double with one out and no one on base in the fourth inning.
Carson Fischer flinched first and falls to 3-5 this season. The Cardinals collected eight hits in 5.1 innings against Fischer. He allowed four earned runs with four walks and five strikeouts. The four walks allowed were the most he's allowed in an appearance this season and he had only allowed a total of two walks in his last four starts.
Colin Cornwell had a RBI double in the third inning and Martin Money followed with a RBI single up the middle to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. The lead grew to 5-0 with three runs in the sixth inning on miscues by the Panthers. Fischer had a throwing error which allowed one run to score on a sacrifice bunt and then Tucker Roe laid down another sacrifice bunt and two runs scored on the play with Brandon Scheurer scoring from third and Connor McClennen scoring all the way from second.
Davenport got their run in the sixth as well when
Miko Rodriguez had an infield single which scored
Carter Troncin. The Panthers had a few chances earlier in the game to score runs, but ultimately left eight runners on base. Rodriguez went 2-for-3 and was the only Panther with multiple hits in game one.
GAME TWO
The Cardinals scored six unearned runs in game two and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added two more runs in the second inning for a 4-0 advantage off starter
Devon Nettles. SVSU scored 10 runs with two outs in the contest as DU just couldn't end enough innings when they needed it. DU scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. They trailed 5-0 but got within striking distance down 7-4 after seven innings. The Cardinals however scored twice in the eighth and five more times in the ninth for the double-digit win.
Ryan Adams got the win improving to 2-2 for Saginaw Valley State. He pitched five innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs with four walks and six strikeouts. Nettles lasted just three innings and took his first loss of the season. He allowed seven hits but just three of the five runs allowed were earned.
Jared Schwartz tossed two innings and only allowed one hit and one run despite four walks.
Alex Lord went two innings and allowed two hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
Tyler Hill was saddled with five runs allowed but just one run was earned. He walked three and struck out two.
Gaetano Vallone had a big game going 2-for-4 with a double and home run, which was hit in the third inning and got DU their first run.
Ben Mets went 3-for-4 at the dish with a run and walk.
UP NEXT
These two teams have played five games straight against each other with DU holding a 3-2 edge. They will play for the final time tomorrow with a single-game scheduled for noon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
