GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's tennis team competed at home at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Club on Friday afternoon. The Panthers earned a confidence booster, claiming the 7-0 victory over Indiana Tech in non-conference action.
The Panthers were aided as the Warriors only had five players on their active roster. Given that, the DU women only needed to win one out of the two doubles matches to claim the point but instead, they acquired both. Beginning at one doubles, No. 19 (NCAA DII Doubles) Amy Bloch and Willemien Coetzee were able to show grit as the match was tricky, but ultimately earned the 6-4 victory over Thaina Carvalho and Abigail Simms. Skye Vandeleur and Hermon Mikael played two doubles as they overcame the challenge to a 7-5 win over Ana Gomez and Roshne Arunkumar.
Bloch played the one singles position, as the South African earned a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win over Carvalho. Coetzee competed at two singles, only dropped one game in the opening set and weathered the storm in the second 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) over Simms. Mikael moved up to three singles, however, the shift did not affect the Swede in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Arunkumar. Carofano also shifted up one spot claiming the first set 6-3, the Canadian had to troubleshoot however as the match went the distance, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 over Gomez.
