CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's tennis team got the opportunity to play a rare home match outdoors at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon and defeated Calvin University by a final score of 6-1. It was the first dual match of the 2023-24 season for the Panthers and it came against the NCAA Division III program from nearby Grand Rapids. The Panthers were able to earn the doubles point by winning two of three matchups.
Joel Mast and
Jan Stolin at No. 1 doubles got a 6-4 win over Rodrigo Alipio and Felipe Sartori of the Knights.
Carlos Henriquez and
Simone Pacciolla at No. 2 doubles had the identical 6-4 win as well over Maurquis Willingham and Emmanuel Henao.
Five of the six singles matchups were claimed by the Panthers. In a rare occurance, Stolin was defeated at No. 1 singles by Alipio by scores of 6-2, 6-3. Stolin went 24-5 last year in singles to set a new single-season Davenport record for wins. Mast barely broke a sweat at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sartori.
Subash Paramasivam, Henriquez, and Pacciolla each had straight-set wins in No. 3-5 singles.
Jose Brenes went three sets at No. 6 against Henao and rallied after losing the first set for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 victory.
