Panthers open conference play with victory against SVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University women's soccer pulled out a resilient effort against Saginaw Valley State University to add their fourth victory to their record in a 1-0 finish.

Gabriana Bennecke was pressed throughout the match as three saves from the six total shot attempts by the Cardinals helped to secure her fourth shutout of the season. Izabelle Olsson, Kathryn Hoeger, Gabby Scholten, and Arianna Diemer were crucial to the success of the defense, with each player logging 90 minutes on the pitch.

A scoreless first half was followed up by a concerted effort from DU in the opening minutes of the second, as a breakaway shot attempt from Haley Diekevers missed just right of the goal, and a second shot just moments later from Ainsley Oliver was saved by SVSU's Lainey Garbarz.

The match seemed to be heading to a 0-0 draw as neither side could put a shot in the net until a corner kick inside of the 79th minute produced results for the Panthers. The corner was sent over by Bianka Batagelj and found Abi Hearn who headed in her second goal of the season, putting DU up by a goal and ultimately securing the win.

Now 4-0 on the season and 1-0 to start conference action, the Panthers will host Ferris State University this Sunday, Sept. 17 at 12 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
