Panthers Comeback Falls Short in GLIAC Opener

MARQUETTE, Mich. -  Following consecutive weekends of out-of-conference play, the Davenport women's volleyball team began GLIAC action Friday evening against Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. The Panthers (3-6, 0-1 GLIAC) couldn't complete the reverse sweep against Wildcats (2-7, 1-0 GLIAC), falling 3-2 as NMU's top player, Jacqueline Smith, returned to the court for the first time since their season opener.

After dropping the first two sets, Davenport bounced back in the third set, which started with a 4-1 rally by the Panthers. Trailing by two points midway through the set, DU went on a 5-1 rally to gain a 14-12 lead over NMU. Lindsay Taylor capped off the third set for the Panthers as she recorded the final kill to take down the Wildcats 25-21.

A kill by Morgan Tydings in the fourth set capped off a 6-1 rally to propel Davenport to a 12-6 advantage early. Back-to-back kills by Taylor late gave DU a six-point lead (22-16) and forced NMU into its second timeout of the set. The Panthers took three of the last four points, all of which came off of kills to get the 25-20 victory and forcing a fifth set.

On the brink of completing the reverse sweep, Davenport could not take the final set, falling 15-9 to Northern Michigan.

Taylor led the Panthers with 16 kills, which tied a match-high, to go along with 15 digs to complete the double-double. Emma Turnquist added nine kills and 2.5 blocks, while Sydney Swan chipped in with a pair of solo blocks. Nicole Odeen registered a team-high 20 assists for DU. Defensively, Stephanie Kalinowski led the way for Davenport with 32 digs.
