Panthers Sweep Huskies in Upper Peninsula

The win marks the first time DU has swept MTU on its home court

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport women's volleyball team capped off its annual trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Michigan Tech 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21).

As a team, the Panthers (4-6, 1-1 GLIAC) recorded more kills (43-39), assists (42-39) and service aces (6-3) than the Huskies (3-7, 1-1 GLIAC). DU also finished the match hitting .200 as opposed to .172 for MTU.

With a back-and-forth first set, the Panthers established a six-point lead following a 7-0 was rally set in motion by a kill from Sydney Swan. Emma Turnquist registered the final two Davenport points with a pair of kills to take an early 1-0 lead in the match following a 25-21 victory in the first set.

Lilly LaFleur spurred a critical 6-0 rally with a kill off an assist from Lexie Beeke late in the second set to give the Panthers an 18-15 advantage. Moments later, a 5-0 rally by the Huskies put the Panthers behind by two points with the score set at 22-20. However, DU scored six of the final eight points as Swan delivered the dagger with a kill of an assist from Beeke to clinch the set 26-24.

Davenport found early success in the third set behind a massive 10-1 rally to give itself a 10-3 advantage with a chance to sweep Michigan Tech. The Panthers capitalized, holding off the Huskies as Morgan Tydings tallied the final two Davenport points of the match (both kills) to win the final set 25-21.

Swan led the way for Davenport, hitting .308 with 10 kills and five digs in the win. The freshman has now finished with double-digit kills in five of the Panthers' 10 matches.

Taylor finished with seven kills and 11 digs for DU, while Turnquist added 10 kills. Nicole Odeen finished the match with 20 assists, while Beeke dished out 16. Stephanie Kalinowski led the way defensively yet again as she tallied 14 digs for the Panthers.

The Panthers will have their home opener next weekend against Lake Superior State at 6 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 22) in the DU Student Center.
