Panthers Down Lakers 3-1 in Home Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  After 10 consecutive road matches to begin the season, the Davenport University women's volleyball team defeated Lake Superior State 3-1 (20-25, -18, -15, -17) in its 2023 home opener. Emmy Webb had her most efficient match of the season, as she finished with nine kills while swinging at a blistering .600 clip to go along with four blocks.

As a team, the Panthers dominated the box score, finishing with more points (73-48), kills (55-42, aces (11-1), blocks (7-5), assists (54-34), and digs (56-52) than the Lakers.

After dropping the first set 25-20, the Panthers got out to a 10-7 lead in the second set as Lindsay Taylor capped off a 4-0 rally with a kill off an assist from Lexie Beeke, forcing the Lakers to take a timeout. Ola Nowak recorded a service ace to conclude a 6-1 run, extending the DU lead to six (20-14) down the stretch. The Panthers recorded three of the final four points of the set, all of which came off of attack errors by LSSU as DU tied the match at one apiece following the 25-18 victory.

Davenport rolled its momentum into the third set, getting out to a commanding 6-0 lead to start. Nicole Odeen had a pair of service aces during the opening rally to help spur the early advantage. Taylor had a pair of kills, which sparked and concluded an 8-2 run for DU, giving the Panthers a nine-point lead (16-7). Lilly LaFleur had the final kill to end the set off an assist from Beeke to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage in the match, winning the set by double-digits (25-15).

The Panthers established another quick lead early in the fourth set, as Webb registered the first kill of the set and DU got out to a 5-0 advantage. After LSSU pulled within one point (6-5), the Panthers went on a dominating 7-0 stretch, in which Sydney Swan accounted for four of the team's seven points as she slammed four kills. Morgan Tydings clinched the match for Davenport as she recorded the final two DU points (both kills) to take the final set 25-17.

Taylor, Tydings, and Swan all finished with 11 kills in the win for Davenport. For Tydings, it marked a career-high in kills and her first time reaching double-digit kills. LaFleur also tied a career-high in kills with seven while hitting .357 in the match.
