Panthers Down Adams State, Fall to No. 1 West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas -  The Davenport University women's volleyball team concluded play at the BritKare Lady Buff Classic as they defeated Adams State before falling to No. 1 West Texas A&M.

Game 1 vs. Adams State
Result: W, 3-1 (-16, -15, 23-25, -16)
How it Happened:
After dropping the first point in set one, the Panthers scored four straight points, two of which were kills by Lindsay Taylor, to gain an early 4-1 advantage. The set went back-and-forth, but the Panthers still held the three-point lead late (17-14) before a blistering 8-2 rally gave them a victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two was highlighted by a staggering 11-0 rally by Davenport, which was spurred by a kill from Sydney Swan and ended with a block by Emma Turnquist and Kaitlin Jordan, giving DU a double-digit advantage (18-8). The Grizzlies (1-3, 0-0 RMAC) were unable to recover from the massive run, and Emmy Webb secured the final point of the set for the Panthers off a service ace.

Trailing 11-5 amid the third set, DU went on an 8-1 rally to regain the lead (13-12) as they looked to secure the sweep. Turnquist kept the Panthers alive late in the set with a kill off an assist from Nicole Odeen to set the score at 24-23 in favor of ASU. However, on the following play, the Grizzlies registered the final kill of the set, ending Davenport's chances of a second sweep on the weekend.

The fourth and final set was made up of extensive rallies, primarily by Davenport. After the Panthers got out to a quick 3-0 lead following a pair of service aces to start the set by Odeen, Adams State went on a 7-0 rally to take a 7-3 edge over DU. Davenport responded immediately with a 9-1 run of its own, fueled by a total of four aces, two by Swan and two by Stephanie Kalinowski. Later in the set, Swan set in motion another big run (8-1) for DU to close out the game, earning their second win of the weekend.

Three Panthers registered double-digit kills: Taylor (13), Swan (12), and Turnquist (10). Swan also recorded five service aces and five digs in the win for DU. Nicole Odeen finished with a match-high 27 assists, five service aces, and three digs while Kalinowski added a match-high 17 digs for the Panthers.

As a team, Davenport hit .296 with 55 kills and 15 aces, while Adams State hit .175 with 37 kills and just three aces.

Game 2 vs. #1 West Texas A&M
Result: L, (18-25, 15-25, 20-25)
How it Happened:
After going down a quick 3-0 to start the first set, the Panthers did not back down against the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M. DU pulled back within one after a block by Lexie Beeke and Webb to set the score at 7-6 in favor of the Lady Buffs (4-0, 0-0 LSC). Later on, Kalinowski served an ace to keep the Panthers within striking distance, trailing by four (16-12). However, West Texas A&M scored six of the next eight and went on to pull away as the set reached its close.

Following an ace by Taylor at the beginning of the second set, the Panthers jumped out to an early 5-3 advantage. However, the Lady Buffs began to turn the tide as they went on a 5-1 rally to take an 11-8 lead, forcing Davenport head coach Brian Netzler to take a timeout. Taylor halted the run out of the break with a kill. However, it would not be enough as the nations' No. 1 team was able to hold off DU, scoring nine of the match's last 12 points.

Davenport took an early lead, as they held an early 6-5 advantage to start the third set. Moments later, the Lady Buffs went on an 8-0 rally to gain a 13-6 lead, one that would be too much for the Panthers to come back from. However, DU would bring the set within three points as Taylor had back-to-back kills to put the score at 22-19 in favor of West Texas A&M, but it would not be enough.

Swan was one kill away from a double-double, finishing the match with nine kills and 10 kills for the Panthers. Webb hit a team-high .278 with eight kills to go along with six digs and three blocks. Taylor continued to be a steady force for DU, registering eight kills and 10 digs. Beeke and Odeen each dished out 13 assists.
