BYRON CENTER, Mich. - The Davenport ACHA men's Division I hockey team made the short trip down US-131 South to Southside Ice Arena on Sunday afternoon in a matchup against Aquinas College. The Saints used a three-goal, second period to capture a 5-1 win over the Panthers. Davenport equals their season record to 1-1 while the Saints improve to 2-1 overall.
Aquinas got the board first as
Kyler Lowden made his first career start in net for the Panthers. Mitchell Hoon scored 36 seconds into the game with assists from Brandon Rozema and Alex Johnson. The Panthers would tie the game and scored their lone goal with 13:46 left in the second period on the power play.
Keelan Saworski was credited with the power play goal and handing assists to
Taber Gutschick and
Robert McLaughlin.
The Saints regained the lead 1:10 later as Xavier Erickson had the goal from Christian Look and Ben Cesario. The next two goals were the back-breaking tallies coming short-handed at 4:26 and 2:57. Logan Wesolek had the first short-handed goal and Nicola Vogel from Ryan Kleber and Look had the second one. The Saints added another with 2:34 left in the third period from Nick Dashner with assists going to Brendan McCatty and Johnson.
Lowden made 21 saves in his debut for Davenport. Michael Allman stopped 53 shots as the Panthers provided constant pressure all game. The penalties were pretty even as DU had 42 minutes compared to 46 for Aquinas. Next up for Davenport is a rematch with Aquinas set for Oct. 4 at Patterson Ice Center beginning at 8:35 PM.
