Alan has Breakout Performance as Panthers Rout Warriors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  Abby Alan had a breakout performance, registering a career-high 17 kills to lead the Davenport University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Wayne State Friday evening at the DU Student Center. Her previous career-high was five and it was the first match of the season that the freshman played in every set.

Three kills by Alan early into the first set helped propel the Panthers to a four-point advantage (7-3). Highlighted by a pair of kills by Abby Welke, DU went on a 5-1 rally to extend their lead to 20-14. With the score set at 24-20 and set point on the line, the Warriors served the ball into the net, and the Panthers took a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Trailing 23-19 in the second set, Davenport went on a 5-1 run to tie the set 24-24, as Alan concluded the rally with her sixth kill of the match. Alan recorded the final three DU points to end the set. However, it was not enough as WSU took the 27-25 victory to tie the match 1-1.

Nicole Odeen got things started for the Panthers in the third set with three straight service aces. Alan continued her career night in the set, leading the charge on a 5-0 rally, giving DU a 10-point lead, 19-9. During that stint, Alan recorded four kills, including three consecutive to ignite the run. Lindsay Taylor finished off the set with back-to-back kills as the Panthers bounced back, defeating the Warriors 25-15 and taking a 2-1 lead.

Taylor dominated the fourth and final set of the match for DU, tallying eight kills to close it out. Three of those came in a 6-1 rally to give the Panthers a 22-14 lead late in the set. Emma Turnquist recorded the final point with a kill off an assist from Odeen.

Leading the match in kills was Taylor with 18 while also registering 11 digs to complete the double-double in the win for the Panthers.

Odeen finished with a season-high 34 assists for Davenport. The senior also tied a season-high with five service aces. Stephanie Kalinowski led the charge defensively for the Panthers, recording a match-high 26 digs.
