Preview: Panthers Continue Homestand Against Warriors and Cardinals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Davenport University men's basketball team is set to conclude its five game homestand, hosting Wayne State on Thursday (Jan. 11), followed by Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Jan. 13). 

Last time out, Myles Belyeu recorded his first double-double of the season in a 59-53 loss to Michigan Tech last Saturday (Jan. 6), scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards. The guard averages 2.08 offensive rebounds per game, ranking fifth in the GLIAC.

About the Warriors
  • Tied at No. 8 in the GLIAC Standings.
  • Coming off a 76-58 loss to Parkside (Jan. 6). Lone conference win came against Purdue Northwest, defeating the Pride 78-86 (Jan. 4).
  • Sophomore guard Carmelo Harris leads the way for the Warriors, averaging a team-high 14.4 points per game, as well as 2.3 assists and 3.0 boards per contest. Harris shoots over 90 percent from the free-throw line and 41 percent from the floor.
  • Ray Williams Jr. has earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors two times this season. The senior forward averages 6.4 rebounds per game, the fifth most in the GLIAC.  
  • Picked to finish ninth in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

About the Cardinals
  • Tied at No.5 in the GLIAC standings.
  • Defeated No. 5 Indianapolis 70-67 at the start of the season (Thursday, Nov. 16).
  • Freddie McIntosh is the top returner for the Cardinals, averaging 15.8 points per game. The Junior was a preseason Second Team All-GLIAC selection and finished as a Second Team All-GLIAC honoree in 2022-23. 
  • Kevonne Taylor leads the conference in blocks with 27, marking the 18th most in the country.
  • As a team, SVSU is the top rebounding team in the GLIAC, averaging 40.77 rebounds per game, ranking 21st across all of Division II.
