Preview: Panthers Prep for Rangers and Pride

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Davenport University men's basketball team is set to continue its five-game homestand, hosting Parkside on Thursday (Jan.25) at 7:30 p.m. and Purdue Northwest on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 3 p.m.

Myles Belyeu continues to do it all for the Panthers (6-10, 2-5 GLIAC), the 6-4 guard finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and two steals against Saginaw Valley State on Monday night (Jan. 22). The Cleveland, Ohio native leads the squad in rebounds (6.5), assists (3.1) and steals (1.2) per game. Belyeu is also the second-leading scorer for DU, averaging 11.5 per contest.

Jovan Tucker has stepped up as of late for DU, posting a career-high in points in each of the last two contests, 14 against Lake Superior State (Jan. 20) and 15 against Saginaw Valley State (Jan. 22). Since entering the starting lineup against Michigan Tech (Jan. 6), Tucker is averaging 7.8 points, 3.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

As a team, DU ranks second in the league in steals per game, averaging over seven takeaways per contest.

About the Rangers
  • GLIAC regular season champion in 2022-23.
  • Lost their top player from a season ago, Rasheed Bello, who was named the 2022-23 GLIAC Player of the Year, averaging 18.5 points per game.
  • UWP is 1-1 against ranked opponents, defeating No. 5 Indianapolis, 79-71 (Nov. 10) and falling to No. 14 Ferris State, 77-73 in overtime (Dec. 9).
  • They return a pair of Second Team All-GLIAC performers, Colin O'Rourke and Josiah Palmer. The duo leads the Rangers in 2023-24, as O'Rourke averages 13.8 points while Palmers drops in a team-high 14.2 points per game.
  • Along with leading his team in scoring, Palmer facilitates the ball as well as anyone in the conference, leading the league in assists per game (4.9). He was also named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week (week one).
  • Picked to finish fourth in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

About the Pride
  • Did not return either of their All-GLIAC performers from the 2022-23 season, Mikell Cooper (First Team) and Alou Dillon (Second Team).
  • Opened the season winning seven of their first nine games. 
  • Defeated No. 14 Ferris State 84-80 (Dec. 7) while only losing to Northern Michigan (first in the GLIAC) by four 82-78 (Jan. 18).
  • PNW scores 79.6 points per game, the third most in the conference.
  • CJ Jackson and Brendan Temple lead the Prides' offense. Jackson averages a team-high 14.8 points per game, while Temple pours in 14.1 per contest, shooting 60 percent from the floor (fourth in the conference).
