Panthers Add Another Win During Homestretch, Sinking Lakers in Five Sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Abby Alan notched her fourth double-double of the season, recording 20 kills and 11 digs to lead the Davenport University women's volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Lake Superior State on Friday evening (Oct. 11).

The Panthers (5-11, 3-5 GLIAC) have now won three of their last four matches, all of which have been at home, and have won 12 straight in the series against the Lakers (5-10, 2-5 GLIAC).

Holding a 6-4 advantage in the early stages of the first set, a kill from Kaitlyn Marsh from Mehl Hansen fueled a 5-0 rally, putting the Panthers ahead of the Lakers 11-4. After an LSSU point on the ensuing play, DU put together a quick 3-0 run capped by a Karley Pretzer kill, expanding the Panther lead to nine (14-5). Leading 22-14, Abby Alan set in motion a 3-0 rally with a kill to close out the set, as Davenport took down Lake Superior State  25-14 in the first set, going ahead 1-0 in the match.

After surrendering the opening point of the second set, DU erupted for a quick 6-0 run, which was set in motion by a Kaitlin Jordan kill. Pretzer spurred and capped a 3-0 rally for the Panthers with a pair of kills to help DU maintain its lead (15-10). However, LSSU responded with an 8-0 rally of its own, taking an 18-15 lead, and forcing a Davenport timeout. Sydney Swan set up Alan for a kill for DU, tying the set back up at 21 apiece. With the score knotted at 24 apiece, LSSU scored on back-to-back plays to tie the match 1-1 following the 26-24 victory.

It was a hot start for DU in set three, going ahead 8-2 as Alan, Jordan and Rachel Youngblood all registered a kill to help the Panthers get out to the early lead. However, the Lakers went on a commanding 13-2 rally, getting out to a 16-10 lead. The Panthers pulled within three (21-18), but could not come back, falling 25-23 and going behind 2-1 in the set.

With a tightly contested start to the fourth set, Jordan sparked a four-point rally, putting the Panthers ahead 16-13. Hansen set up Youngblood for a kill, which led to an 8-2 run for DU and a 24-17 edge. A kill from Emma Turnquist sealed it, as the Panthers forced a fifth set following the 25-18 win.

DU gave up the first two points of the fifth set, but answered with an impressive 10-3 run, going ahead of LSSU 10-5 and forcing the Lakers to take a timeout. During that stretch, Alan paced the offense recording three kills to help gain the lead. Turnquist took over down the stretch, recording back-to-back kills putting the Panthers one point away from clinching the match (14-10) On the ensuing play, the Lakers had an attack error to end the match as DU won the final set 15-10.

Turnquist finished with 17 kills while hitting a staggering .571 in the win for the Panthers. Pretzer and Marsh each tallied six kills for DU, while Hansen recorded a match-high 45 assists in the win. Defensively, Hayley Carr ended the night with a team-high 14 digs.
