GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey team ran into a talented and deep Calvin University squad on Friday night in Great Lakes 6 Conference action. The 10th-ranked Knights came away with a 4-1 win over the Panthers to improve to 5-0 this season. Davenport with the loss currently stands at 5-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Knights defense was particularly strong allowing just 19 shots on goal by the Panthers. That number is a season low for Davenport. Calvin managed 34 shots on net including a 26-9 edge through the first two periods.
Calvin was able to convert twice in six power play chances. Meanwhile, the Panthers went 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Ethan Pool opened the scoring at 8:42 of the first period on a power play goal with an assist from Daniel Siso. The Knights would continue to slowly add to their lead in the second period. Hayden Zimmerman scored his second goal of the season at 7:31 followed by a goal at 17:02 by Zimmerman again on the power play.
Siso scored his second of the season at 9:49 of the third period for a 4-0 advantage with assists from Lou Vesperini and Tony Eaton.
Trent Benedict increased his team-leading goal total to six at the 11:16 mark unassisted. Carlos Siso made 18 saves for Calvin in net for the win.
Kyler Lowden was able to stop 30 shots on the night for Davenport.
