Matyunas and Lopez lead DU to historic 2-1 finish over No. 13 SCS

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Marking the second highest nationally-ranked opponent the team has defeated in its NCAA/GLIAC history, Davenport University men's soccer tallied a 2-1 home victory over No. 13 St. Cloud State University for the Panthers' second top-15 win of 2024.

16 fouls committed by DU highlighted the aggressiveness shown by the home side. The Panthers and Huskies were tied in the offensive category, with both teams attempting 14 shots with four on goal. Not wasting any time in the early portions, a through ball by Henry Lopez near midfield was well-placed as the loose ball bounced over the hands of the keeper and was cleaned up by Drew Matyunas (8'), giving DU a 1-0 lead.

Just over 10 minutes later, an identical situation occurred for the Panthers. Isiah Meyer sent a through ball upfield for Easton Lopez to line up a successful strike ('19), increasing the lead to 2-0 before halftime. Lopez's season total is now six goals, three being game-winners. DU got off another shot-on-target before the end of the half, as they were held to one attempt on goal throughout the latter 45 minutes of play after the Huskies flipped the aggression.

After being held to four shots in the first half, St. Cloud managed 10 attempts in the second, one of which laced the back of the goal after a shot by Philip Caputo, 2-1. The Huskies followed up their only score with eight more shot attempts, but the Panther defense held up strong to the end to secure DU's fifth win this year (5-3-4, 2-1-3 GLIAC).

The Panthers remain undefeated at home (3-0-1) after the victory and look to translate the momentum to their upcoming road trip next week, with the Huskies up next for a rematch on Friday, Oct. 18, in Minnesota.
