Burlacenco nets game-winner to lift DU over SCS

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Shutting out the league opponent on their home pitch, Davenport University men's soccer (6-3-4, 3-1-3 GLIAC) defeated St. Cloud State University, 1-0, to make it back-to-back wins against the Huskies for the regular-season sweep (2-0).

The Panthers have not lost a game against SCS as they improved the historical series to 7-0-2 overall. St. Cloud held DU to just three shots-on-target, outpacing the Panthers 16-to-12 in attempts with seven shots on net. However, DU managed to overcome the defensive pressure as an unassisted goal by Valerii Burlacenco (55') just under 10 minutes into the second half gave the Panthers a 1-0 advantage, resulting in the senior forward's second goal of 2024 and first game-winner in a DU uniform.

Beau Hudd made seven saves in the first shutout victory this year, marking the freshman keeper's first clean sheet of his career. Henry Lopez and Isiah Meyer also made noteworthy efforts, the freshmen pair accounting for the only other shots-on-target by DU.

The Panthers will look to extend their winning streak in another road match on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Northern Michigan University.
