Panthers Split Day Two of Midwest Region Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. - After opening the Midwest Region Crossover with a victory on Friday afternoon, the Davenport University women's volleyball team finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, splitting its matches on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Result: W, 3-0
How it Happened
DU dominated the Saints in the sweep, recording 51 more kills than Thomas More in the 3-0 victory.

The Panthers (8-12, 4-5 GLIAC) established their dominance early, going ahead of the Saints 9-2 to start the opening set. Abby Alan led the way in the early stretch for Davenport, recording a pair of kills. A 5-1 rally midway through the set was capped by a service ace from Ashley Arceo, giving the Panthers a double-digit lead (15-5). An Alan kill spurred a 7-2 run for DU, which gave the Panthers a 25-12 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Mehl Hansen capped a 3-0 rally to begin the second set with a service ace, allowing Davenport to gain the early advantage. With the set tied at six apiece, the Panthers put together an impressive 9-1 run, capped by a Kaitlyn Marsh kill. Rachel Youngblood slammed back-to-back kills late in the set to propel DU to a 24-16 advantage. Sealing the set was Alan, as she recorded a kill off an assist from Hansen to put the Panthers up 2-0 in the match following the 25-17 win.

A kill by Youngblood set in motion a 5-1 rally for the Panthers, pushing DU ahead of the Saints 16-14. Down the stretch, Alan helped secure the sweep, leading the charge with a pair of kills on a 3-1 rally to clinch the set 25-20.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Alan, who tallied a match-high 14 kills to go along with five digs. Youngblood ended with eight kills while swinging at a .368 for Davenport. Hansen notched a team-high 13 assists, while Hayley Carr led the way defensively with 12 digs.

How it Happened
Despite the loss, freshman Karley Pretzer had her best game in a Davenport uniform, notching a season-high 12 kills while swinging at a .345 percent clip.

Davenport got out to a 6-3 lead to begin the first set of the match with Youngblood, Alan and Marsh all recording a kill in the early stages. After falling behind 23-18, a kill by Pretzer sparked a 4-1 rally, pulling the Panthers within two (24-22). However, Drury scored on the ensuing play, taking the set 25-22.

An 8-1 rally, set in motion by a kill from Youngblood,  gave Davenport a 10-8 lead to start the second set. Pretzer scored three consecutive Davenport points late in the set to help keep them in the set, as they trailed 23-21.  With the score at 24-23 in favor of Drury, Lauren Tyler sealed the set with a kill to take down Davenport 25-23 and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

Back-to-back kills from Pretzer in the third set pulled Davenport within two points late (19-17). But once again, Drury found a way to come out on top, ending the set on a 5-2 rally, taking down Davenport 25-19 and securing the sweep.

Alan finished with a match-high 14 kills and seven digs in the loss for Davenport. Hansen tallied a team-high 31 assists, while Jessica Florn chipped in with a career-high 17 digs.
