CALEDONIA, Mich. - Tallying a big win at home, Davenport University men's soccer (7-4-4, 4-2-3 GLIAC) shut out Wisconsin-Parkside, 1-0, to close the season series at 1-0-1 against the opponent. The victory positioned DU in a second-place tie for conference points (15) in the GLIAC leaderboards.
The Rangers held a seven-to-three edge in shot totals through the first 45 - but each side tallied two attempts on net, with Beau Hudd recording two of his five saves to keep the match level at halftime, 0-0.Â
Aggressiveness from the teams in the early portions of the second half saw a pair of yellow cards issued to Drew Matyunas and Tank Anderson. A few minutes later, Matyunas set up Kirby Eggers with a scoring chance outside the box. The deep positioning didn't dissuade him from sending a strike toward the goal, resulting in Eggers' first score of the season and second game-winner of his career. The assist by Matyunas marked the first ever in his career. Although DU tallied five more shot attempts throughout the rest of the half, concerted defense was the focus as the Panthers disrupted 10 shot attempts by the Rangers. Hudd made three more saves in the half to lead to his second career shutout victory.
With two regular-season home matches remaining on the schedule, DU hosts Purdue Northwest on Sunday, Oct. 27, for the Panthers' annual Senior Day celebration with a 2 p.m. kickoff at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
