Engle and Eggers lead Panthers to victory on Senior Day

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Adding six points to its season total, Davenport University men's soccer (8-4-4, 5-2-3 GLIAC) secured a 2-1 victory over Purdue Northwest on Senior Day, closing the season series 1-0-1 against the Pride.

The Panthers are still undefeated at home (5-0-1) as a patient offensive attack by DU saw two shot attempts through just over 40 minutes played in the first half. Nearing halftime, Beau Hudd made a save (six total) after a shot attempt by Augusto Ruiz, resulting in a transition break for the Panthers. Valerii Burlacenco sent a cross near the box as the ball bounced over a defender, setting up Ethan Engle for a one-on-one opportunity for a strike that was rocketed in by the true freshman for his first goal of his career, 1-0.

Facing a deficit on the road, PNW managed to capitalize on one of their four shots-on-goal, as an attempt just under five minutes into the second half ricocheted off the left post and past the goal line to level the score, 1-1. DU remained poised after giving up the score by putting up 20 minutes of concerted defense, waiting for its next opportunity to strike back.

Patience paid off for the Panthers near the 71st minute, with Easton Lopez leading an attack from midfield down to the attacking third, sending a cross across the opponent's box to Kirby Eggers who made a one-touch flick into the goal to secure DU's eighth win of 2024.

DU's victory leads to the final regular season home contest this year, with the Panthers hosting Saginaw Valley State in a rematch against the conference foe on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
