Panthers Sweep Lakers on Saturday Evening

CHICAGO, Ill. -  In their first meeting as conference opponents, the Davenport University women's volleyball team swept Roosevelt on Saturday evening  at the Goodman Center. The Lakers (2-19, 0-10 GLIAC) are in the midst of their first season as a part of the GLIAC, making the jump from NAIA to NCAA Division II ahead of the 2024 academic year.

Mehl Hansen started the opening set with a service ace for the Panthers (9-13, 5-6 GLIAC), spurring a 4-1 rally capped by an Abby Alan kill. Moments later, a kill from Alan off a Hansen assist allowed DU to put together another 4-1 run, getting out to a five-point advantage (10-5). Leading 22-18 late, another kill from Alan set in motion a set-winning 3-1 rally, taking down the Lakers 25-19 and going ahead 1-0 in the match.

DU scored four consecutive points early in the second set, starting with a kill by Rachel Youngblood, to go ahead of RU, 9-4.  The Lakers pulled back within one point of the Panthers (12-11), but back-to-back kills from Kaitlyn Marsh gave DU a three-point cushion (14-11). A service ace from Kaitlin Jordan propelled the Panthers to a 23-18 lead late, forcing a Roosevelt timeout. Set two ended with the same score as set one, as the Panthers came out with a 25-19 win, following an attack error by RU on the final play.

In the final set, Davenport dominated from nearly start to finish. The Panthers put together a massive 16-4 rally, taking a 23-10 insurmountable lead over the Lakers. Alan led the way with three kills during that stretch, while Jordan and Turnquist each notched two kills. DU won the set 25-16 to secure the sweep, as the set ended on an attack error by the Lakers.

Alan led the way for the Panthers with a match-high 13 kills while also tallying 13 digs in the victory. Jordan added seven kills, while Turnquist and Marsh chipped in with six kills apiece. Hansen ended the night with a match-high 34 assists, while Hayley Carr registered a team-high 19 digs.
