Panthers Fall in Four Sets to No. 12 GVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to No. 12 Grand Valley State to open its four-match homestand on Friday afternoon at the DU Student Center

Three consecutive kills by Emma Turnquist put the Panthers up 3-1 to start the opening set. Trailing by one (17-16), a kill by Abby Alan set in motion a dominating 7-0 rally for DU, putting the Panthers ahead 22-17. The Lakers halted the run on the ensuing play, but Davenport ended the set on a 3-0 run, which featured two kills from Karley Pretzer, to take down GVSU 25-18 and go ahead 1-0 in the match. In the set, DU registered six more kills than GVSU (18-12) and hit .390, compared to .171 for the Lakers.

After falling behind 7-2 in set two, the Panthers put together a 6-1 rally, capped by consecutive Alan service aces, tied the set at eight apiece. However, the Lakers slowly pulled away, eventually ending the set on an 8-3 run, securing the 25-17 victory and tying the match 1-1. Despite falling, the Panthers hit a higher percentage in the set (.400) than the Lakers (.370).

Grand Valley State went on to control the majority of the final two sets, winning set three 25-12 and set four 25-15, winning the match 3-1.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Alan, finishing with 20 kills, 12 digs and two aces. The sophomore has now recorded seven double-doubles this season and it marks the fourth time she has eclipsed 20 kills.
