Panthers Sweep Pride in GLIAC Home Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team opened the weekend with a 3-0 sweep over Purdue Northwest on Friday evening at the DU Student Center. Leading the way for the Panthers (3-10, 1-4 GLIAC) was Rachel Youngblood, recording a match-high 14 kills along with four digs while hitting .294.

Abby Alan gave DU its first lead of the first set as she slammed a kill to put the Panthers on top of the Pride (3-9, 1-4 GLIAC), 19-18. Facing set point (24-22), Youngblood helped keep the Panthers alive with back-to-back kills, setting the score at 24 apiece. On the ensuing play, the Pride regained a one-point lead (25-24), but the Panthers answered with three consecutive points to take the first set. During that final three-point rally, Youngblood had a pair of kills, including the final one to put PNW away 27-25.

Consecutive kills by Kaitlyn Marsh midway through the second set tied the score at 14 apiece. Shortly after, DU put together a 4-0 rally, going up 20-17 on PNW. Leading 23-20, Emma Turnquist registered a kill to put the Panthers one point away from going up 2-0 in the match. On the ensuing play, Turnquist teamed with Marsh for a block to seal the set with a 25-20 victory. 

The Panthers took an early lead in the third set, starting on a 5-0 run, which was capped by a kill from Turnquist. Shortly after, Alan spurred a quick three-point rally for Davenport, going ahead 10-5 and forcing a Purdue Northwest timeout. Leading 13-9, DU strung together another 5-0 run, taking an insurmountable nine-point advantage (18-9). Youngblood put the match away with a kill off an assist from Mehl Hansen, taking down PNW 25-18 and securing the sweep.

Turnquist ended the match swinging at a highly efficient .471 clip, tallying 10 kills and three assisted blocks. Alan added eight kills and 13 digs in the win for the Panthers, while Hansen registered a match-high 31 assists.

The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 5, hosting Parkside at 5 p.m. at the DU Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
