Alan Dominates as Panthers Rout Rangers in Five Sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Abby Alan registered a career-high 22 kills to go along with 10 digs to lead the Davenport University women's volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Parkside on Saturday (Oct. 5) at the DU Student Center. The performance marks the third double-double of the season for the sophomore and the eighth time she has tallied double-digit kills in a match in 2024.

After a kill from Emma Turnquist trimmed the Panther's (4-10, 2-4 GLIAC) deficit to six (17-11) in the first set, the Rangers (7-7, 3-3 GLIAC) put together a 6-0 rally to take a 23-11 advantage. DU responded with a 6-1 run to stay alive in the set, but UWP came out on top 25-17, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Rachel Youngblood slammed a kill off an assist from Mehl Hansen, giving Davenport a two-point advantage (9-7) to start the second set, forcing Parkside head coach Leigh Barea to take a timeout. Kaitlyn Marsh spurred and capped a quick 3-0 rally for the Panthers with a pair of kills to propel the Davenport lead to three (16-13).  An attack error from UWP put DU ahead 22-17, its largest lead of the set. With the score knotted at 23 apiece, the Panthers registered back-to-back points, which included a kill from Alan, to take down the Rangers 25-23.

Davenport held a 5-4 lead early in the third set, following a 3-0 rally set in motion by a kill from Turnquist. After falling behind by five points late (21-16), the Panthers sprung together a 6-2 rally, which featured a pair of kills from Alan. However, UWP answered with consecutive points, taking the set 25-22 and going up 2-1 in the match.

Starting the set with a four-point deficit (8-4), the Panthers bounced back with a 6-0 rally, which was capped by a service ace from Alan to give DU a 10-8 advantage. A pair of kills from Youngblood helped DU spring together a three-point rally, going ahead of UWP 15-12. Alan caught fire, notching three kills during a 7-0 rally for Davenport, giving the Panthers a six-point advantage (22-14). Youngblood forced the fifth set, slamming a kill off an assist from Hansen, winning the fourth 25-18.

DU started the final set on a scorching 6-1 run, featuring a pair of kills from Turnquist and Youngblood to put the Panthers in a good position early. Parkside fought back, getting within one point (12-11), but Davenport held them off and ended the match on a 3–1 rally, and taking the 15-12 victory and 3-2 win overall.

Youngblood hit an impressive .314 with 16 kills and four digs in the win for the Panthers. Turnquist added eight kills, while Marsh chipped in with six and three assisted blocks.

Hansen finished the night with a season-high 47 assists while adding 11 digs and two service aces for DU. The double-double marked the second of the season for the junior setter.
