Meadows sinks game-winner in historical win over No. 2 GVSU

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Davenport University women's soccer achieved a historical moment after defeating No. 2 Grand Valley State University in a 1-0 home victory for the first-ever win against the crosstown opponent, and the highest nationally-ranked opponent the team has defeated in its NCAA and GLIAC history.

The match was tightly contested from the opening kickoff to the final horn, but a single goal would be the difference maker as DU snapped a 12-match skid against the Lakers in an unprecedented result for the Panthers.

GVSU tallied the only shot-on-goal through the first 45 minutes of play, as five total attempts by the opponent and three by DU couldn't give either team an edge going into the break. The Panthers flipped the aggression in their favor in the second half as six shots, three on target, outpaced the Lakers' four attempts with just one on the mark. Nullified scoring attempts persisted throughout the match, but two big saves by Elizabeth Wolter between the 80th and 82nd minute kept the Panthers alive - leading to her third shutout victory this year.

Just over 60 seconds later, DU received a throw-in chance deep inside GVSU's attacking third. Julia Tamasy took advantage of the opportunity by sending a well-placed cross into the box, setting up Taylor Meadows for a successful header that sailed over the hands of the Lakers' keeper to solidify the conference victory and dissolve the opponent's once-undefeated record.
