Panthers advance to GLIAC Semis after historic win over Bulldogs

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University women's soccer built on its impressive season with a historical result in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals, defeating Ferris State 1-0 for the first win in the GLIAC postseason and first-ever victory against the Bulldogs in program history.

The match resulted in a single goal, but the offensive attack from both sides was the opposite of dormant. FSU posted 25 shots (12 on net) and the Panthers tallied 15 attempts overall with four on target, as neither side could capitalize on an opportunity in the first 45 minutes of action.

It wasn't until just over 20 minutes into the latter half that a scoring opportunity broke out in favor of DU. After a scramble near midfield, the Panthers regained possession of the ball with Haley Diekevers leading the attack with a few skip passes made along the way. Just as it seemed the Bulldogs' defensive line would stop the opportunity, Nadia Buist made a touch pass toward Diekevers as the senior forward booted a shot that sailed over the hands of the keeper and into the goal (68') - her sixth score and fifth game-winner of 2024. The Panther defense was put to the test, as Elizabeth Wolter made 12 crucial saves (nine in first half) to keep DU alive.

Diekevers is now tied fourth in the program leaderboards for career game-winners (10) and the stand-alone No. 2 all-time leader for most game-winners in a season (five). Buist's assist tallied the first-ever in the freshman midfielder's career.

DU advances to the semifinal round to face No. 1-seeded Northern Michigan on Friday, Nov. 15.
