Preview: Panthers Host Grace Christian on Wednesday Night

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Davenport University men's basketball team continues its four-game homestand on Wednesday night against Grace Christian at 7 p.m. at the DU Student Center.

Through two games, the freshmen frontcourt tandem of Matyas Vrabel and Dylan Smith have led the Panthers, each averaging nine points per game, which leads the team. Vrabel also leads the squad in rebounds per game (7.5) while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor. Smith notched a double-double in the season opener against Rockhurst (Nov. 8), scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 boards.

About the Tigers
  • Finished their 2023-24 campaign with an 18-14 overall record, going 10-4 in conference play.
  • Won the NCCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship, defeating No. 1 seed Great Lakes Christian 78-60. Fell to North Central 83-75 in the NCCAA Nationals, halting their chances for a National Championship.
  • Senior Bankeys Omari is the top player for the Tigers. The 6-0 guard averages a team-high 16.8 points per game, while ranking second in rebounds per game (5.3).
  • The Tigers enter the game on a two-game winning streak, defeating Welch 98-71 (Nov. 8) and Boyce 80-71 (Nov. 9).
  • GCU is led by head coach Ryan Krombeen, who is in his third season at the helm of the program. Krombeen played for the Tiger from 2009-2012, playing a key role in four NCCAA DII National Championships. Upon graduation, he was an assistant coach for the varsity team (2012-13) and then the head JV basketball coach at GCU (2015-22).
