GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The incredibly tough stretch of games continued for the No. 24 Panthers as they faced No. 4 Adrian in a pair of games. The Panthers visited Arrington Ice Arena on Thursday night and could not find their offense in a 3-0 loss and then they returned to Grand Rapids on Friday with a 4-2 setback at Patterson Ice Center. Davenport is now 10-9 overall and 3-4 in the Great Lakes 6 Conference.
Davenport has played nine straight games against nationally-ranked teams and showed a very competitive nature against a Bulldog squad that is always a threat to win the ACHA Division 1 national championship. In Thursday night's contest, the Panthers did have several chances to crack the scoreboard. They finished with 17 shots on goal but went 0-for-6 on the power play. They had twice the power play chances than Adrian who finished 0-for-3.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the first period as Sebastian Smith scored his seventh of the season at 6:21 on an odd-man rush with assists from Matteo Turrin and Cash Regan. Hunter Allen later at 13:57 scored his fourth goal of the season from Regan.
David Dell scored the final goal at 5:49 for his second tally of the year with assists from Braidan Simmons-Fischer and Cameron Armstrong.
Kyler Lowden managed to stop 36 shots for the Panthers while Noah Decottignies made 17 saves in the shutout for the Bulldogs.
Friday's 4-2 loss was heartbreaking for Davenport as they found themselves tied at 2-2 late in the third period and going on the power play after a minor penalty by the Bulldogs. Adrian however delivered a crushing blow as Nash Hatcher scored a short-handed goal at 17:17 to take a 3-2 lead. Less than two minutes later, Davenport pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and Adrian buried the empty-net goal at 19:07 from Dylan Gajewski.
Gajewski started the scoring at 8:39 of the first period for his eighth goal of the campaign from Cyrus Toth. DU's leading scorer
Trent Benedict tied the game at 1:51 of the second period from
Peter Stojcevski. The final period provided the most scoring as Smith scored on the power play for Adrian at 1:08.
Robert McLaughlin tied it up at 10:16 with his fifth tally of the season from
Ryder McMillen and
Kristers Klavins.
Adrian finished with 37 shots on goal compared to 20 for the Panthers. Davenport did not score on the power play going 0-for-4. Peyton Trzaska stopped 18 shots for the Bulldogs in net and
Nathan Gauthier managed to record 33 saves for the Panthers. The team will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. next weekend to play Robert Morris (7-6) on Friday, Nov. 22 (8 PM) and Saturday, Nov. 23 (2 PM).
