Panthers Close Regular Season with 3-2 Loss to PNW

HAMMOND, Ind. - Abby Alan notched her 11th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 13 digs as the Davenport University women's volleyball team dropped its final match of the regular season 3-2 to Purdue Northwest on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16).

After falling behind by six (13-17) in the opening set, a kill from Karley Prezer sparked a 5-1 DU rally, bringing the Panthers (10-18, 6-11 GLIAC) within two points (14-12). However, the Pride (9-17, 5-11 GLIAC) answered with an 8-2 run, which put them ahead 22-14, a lead that proved to be too much for Davenport as PNW came out on top 25-18 in set one.

DU put together an impressive 9-1 rally in the early stages of the second set to take an early 12-7 edge over PNW. During that stretch, Alan had four points, including three service aces to lead the charge in the surge. On the ensuing play, PNW scored a point to temporarily halt the run, but the Panthers then scored five consecutive points, capped by an Emma Turnquist kill, to go ahead by nine (17-8). Leading 24-16, Pretzer sealed the set with a kill off a Mehl Hansen assist, tying the match 1-1.

To open the third set, the Panthers carried momentum from the previous set, going on top 4-0. Davenport led almost the entire set until the Pride took their first lead at 22-20 behind a 4-0 run. Alan pulled the Panthers within one (22-21) on the ensuing play with the kill, but the Pride finished on a 3-1 rally and took a 25-22 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Pretzer slammed a kill to fuel a 5-0 rally for the Panthers in the fourth set, as the Panthers took a 10-5 lead. With the set tied at 17 apiece, Davenport finished the set on an 8-2 rally, finished off by an Alan kill, forcing a fifth set following the 25-19 victory.

In the final set, the Panthers held a 13-12 lead following a PNW attack error. However, the Pride answered with three consecutive points to secure the five-set victory with the 15-13 set five win.

Hansen finished with a match-high 38 assists, moving her up to 787 on the season, which ranks 10th in program history for assists in a single season. Pretzer finished with 10 kills and three digs, while Kaitlyn Marsh added eight kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Kaitlin Jordan chipped in with eight kills in the loss for the Panthers.

Defensively, Hayley Carr registered a match-high 25 digs for Davenport. The freshman now has 398 on the season, which leads the team.
