PREVIEW: Panthers Open GLIAC Tournament at No. 2-Seeded GVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 7-seeded Davenport University women's volleyball team is set to travel to Allendale on Wednesday (Nov. 20) to take on No. 11 Grand Valley State (No. 2 seed in the tournament) at 6 p.m. The Lakers defeated the Panthers in both meetings during the regular season.

Abby Alan
  • Has recorded a double-double in six of the previous seven matches.
  • On the season, the sophomore has tallied 11 doubles-doubles.
  • Leads the squad in kills with 351 kills, ranking seventh in the GLIAC.

Hayley Carr

  • Ranked No. 11 in the AVCA Division II national rankings. 
  • In 2023, the Lakers went 27-5 overall and 16-2 in conference action, winning the regular season GLIAC Championship. GVSU then made the NCAA Tournament but fell in the second round to Missouri St. Louis in the Midwest Regional Semifinals. 
  • Jordyn Gates is the top returner for the Lakers in 2024. In 2023, the Grand Rapids, Mich. native was a First Team All-American, named GLIAC Player of the Year and set a new NCAA single-season record for triple-doubles (15). Through 27 matches in 2024, Gates leads the squad in kills (238), assists (567) and points per set (3.40), while leading the nation in triple-doubles (11).
  • Grand Valley ranks second in the nation in blocks per set (2.76), which also leads the conference. Leading the way for the Lakers in blocks per set is Paige Sanders (1.25), ranking first in the GLIAC. 
  • Have totaled eight GLIAC Player of the Week honors; Brianna Stawski (four times), Julia Blaney (two times), Kendall Stover and Paige Sanders. 
  • Only two losses have come to No. 1 Ferris State.
  • Picked to finish second in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll, while receiving four first-place votes.
