Panthers Conclude Weekend with 3-1 Loss to Warriors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - The Davenport University women's volleyball team fell to Wayne State 3-1 on Saturday evening (Nov. 2) at the DU Student Center.

Sydney Swan opened up the first set with a service ace and the Panthers (9-15, 5-8 GLIAC) got out to a 2-0 lead early. As the tightly contested set continued, Emma Turnquist sparked a 5-1 DU rally off an assist from Mehl Hansen, tying the score at 17 apiece. However, the Warriors (11, 8-4 GLIAC) finished the opening set on a 4-1 rally, taking down the Panthers 25-22, going up 1-0 in the match.

After surrendering three consecutive points in set two, DU head coach Charley Andrews took a timeout as the Panthers trailed 17-14. Out of the break, the Panthers went on a 3-0 run, capped by a Rachel Youngblood service ace to tie the score 17-17. Moments later, DU caught fire, ending the set on a scorching 6-0 run, set in motion by an Abby Alan kill, as the Panthers defeated the Warriors 25-20 and tied the match 1-1.

With set three tied 12-12, a kill from Turnquist fueled a 6-2 rally for the Panthers, giving DU a four-point advantage (18-14) and forcing a Wayne State timeout. However, WSU ended the set on an impressive 10-3 rally, taking the set 25-22 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Three kills from Turnquist helped the Panthers put together a 5-1 rally, tying set four (10-10).  However, Wayne State had another big rally late, out-scoring Davenport 9-2 in the final stretch and winning the final set 25-18.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Turnquist, recording a team-high 12 kills and two aces while hitting .375 in the loss. Alan registered her eighth double-double of the season, finishing the night with 11 kills and 16 digs. Youngblood chipped in with 11 kills, four digs and three aces. Hansen added a team-high 36 assists, while Hayley Carr notched a team-high 17 digs.
